The Herbert C. Bonner Bridge was a two-lane automobile bridge spanning the Oregon Inlet, between Bodie Island from Pea Island, in Dare County, North Carolina. A former bridge spanning Oregon Inlet on the Outer Banks was named in honor of him and his service to the state of North Carolina. When the bridge was replaced in 2019, 1,000 ft of the Bonner bridge was left to be used a pier and retains the Bonner name. The M/V Herbert C. Bonner, a 25 car ferry was also named for him.

In December 1866, Etheridge left the service at Brazos Santiago, Texas. He returned to the Outer Banks, where he married. Etheridge made his living fishing and serving in the newly formed Life-Saving Service, first at Oregon Inlet in 1875, then at Bodie Island.
Between 2018 and 2022, a jughandle-shaped bridge bypass of the community of Rodanthe was constructed. The bridge, known as the Rodanthe Bridge, opened on July 28, 2022, and spans 2.4 miles (3.9 km) of the Pamlico Sound. It replaced a section of NC 12 known for frequent closures due to overwash, flooding, and sand accumulation. [26]
