Celina (/ s ɪ ˈ l aɪ n ə / sil-EYE-nə) is a city in Collin and Denton counties in the U.S. state of Texas. Celina is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex . The population was 16,739 at the 2020 census , [ 3 ] and according to 2023 census estimates, the city is estimated to have a population of 43,317.
Celina High School's mascot is the Bobcat and the high school is best known for its dominating football program – it has eight state championships, tied for the most among 11-man programs in Texas (2007, 2005, 2001, 2000, 1999, 1998, 1995, and 1974).
Celina Campus opened in the fall of 2021. The first phase of the campus is 96,000 square feet and support up to 2,500 students. The original building held 1,000 books but was quickly deemed to be insufficient for growth and a new library underwent construction in November 1948. At a cost of $50,000 the new building opened on July 7, 1949 and held 8,111 volumes.
The current Texas State Librarian is Gloria Meraz, appointed by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission on August 27, 2021.
