David Byrne was born on 14 May 1952 in Dumbarton, Dunbartonshire, Scotland, [2] [3] the elder of two children born to Tom (from Lambhill, Glasgow) and Emma Byrne. Byrne's father was Catholic and his mother Presbyterian. Two years after his birth, the family moved to Canada, settling in Hamilton, Ontario.
David Napier was born in Dumbarton to a family of engineers (the Kilmahew branch of the Napier family). He was the son of Robert Napier (1726–1790), and cousin of another Robert Napier – known as the "Father of Clyde Shipbuilding."
