Iya Abubakar was born in Belel, British Cameroon (now in Adamawa State, Nigeria), on December 14, 1934.He attended Yola Middle School (now General Murtala Mohammed College), Government College (now Barewa College) in Zaria, and the Nigerian College of Technology, also in Zaria.
