The modern Route 108 was designated in the 1932 state highway renumbering, but only between downtown Shelton (the current northern end) and the Huntington green with a length of about 3.4 miles (5.5 km). The designation was extended another 4.4 miles (7.1 km) in 1951 along the Huntington Turnpike to the village of Nichols, ending at then Route 113.

White Hills has a volunteer fire department, Shelton Fire Company 5. [1] The fire company was formed in 1947 and the first truck was purchased in 1948, costing $7,000. Members signed personal notes to assure the payment of the new vehicle. They also held two-day country fairs to help in the payment for the new fire truck.
From here, US 5/Route 15 cross over the Connecticut River on the Charter Oak Bridge, where the routes enter the town of East Hartford. On the other side of the bridge, there is an interchange serving Route 2 , where northbound US 5 splits and exits Route 15 onto Main Street, which runs north through the center of East Hartford.
