The diocese was formed by a merger of neighbouring dioceses in 1976, before itself merging with the neighbouring Diocese of Tuam in 2022 to form the Diocese of Tuam, Limerick and Killaloe. The diocese was in the ecclesiastical province of Dublin and was one of the twelve Church of Ireland dioceses that cover the whole of Ireland.

The Diocese of Limerick (Irish: Deoise Luimnigh) is a Latin diocese of the Catholic Church in mid-western Ireland, one of six suffragan dioceses in the ecclesiastical province of Cashel and Emly. The cathedral church of the diocese is St John's Cathedral in Limerick. The incumbent bishop of the diocese is Brendan Leahy.

It comprises the greater part of County Clare, a large portion of County Tipperary, and parts of Counties Offaly, Laois and Limerick, stretching from Birr Parish in the north to Toomevara Parish in the East and to Cross Parish on the Loop Head peninsula in the south-west of the diocese.
