On 1 April 1980, the unit was officially established as the Royal Malaysian Air Force Ground and Air Defence Force (Malay: Pasukan Pertahanan Darat dan Udara), taking over security responsibilities from the Malaysian Military Police Corps at the RMAF Kuala Lumpur Air Base.
