The Californian Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race run annually in late April at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California (relocated from the now closed Hollywood Park Racetrack in Inglewood, California). The Grade II event is open to horses age three and up willing to race one and one-eighth miles (9 furlongs) on the dirt.
The term has been applied to two configurations of races, both of which include the races of the Triple Crown—the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes—and either the Travers Stakes or the Breeders' Cup Classic as the final race. The Travers Stakes Grand Slam is the older version, having been possible since 1875.
Thorpedo Anna could be the star of the Breeders' Cup, but City of Troy and Fierceness are among the favorites to win the $7-million Breeders' Cup Classic.
