The U.S. Army Test and Evaluation Command (ATEC) was established October 1, 1999 by the Vice Chief of Staff with the primary function of ensuring that our Soldiers go to war with weapons that work. ATEC has overall responsibility for all Army developmental and operational testing, operating from subordinate commands and test centers.
ATEC is located throughout the continental United States, Alaska, and Hawaii. During any given day, approximately 1,100 tests are ongoing in the United States and around the world. The maps for ATEC, AEC, and OTC locations in this section give an indication of the size and diversity of the organization.
LEADERSHIP. Mr. Christopher Barrett is the Executive Director of the Army Evaluation Center, U.S. Army Test and Evaluation Command at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md.. MISSION. The Army Evaluation Center produces unbiased, independent safety and operational evaluations to enable the Army to dominate in the multi-domain operational environment.
ATEC's 9,000 military, civilian and contract employees are highly skilled test officers, engineers, scientists, technicians, researchers and evaluators that are involved in over 1,100 tests daily. ATEC's job is to make sure we send our Soldiers to war with weapon systems that work.

Our mission has been constant – to provide test and evaluation (T&E) services for most everything in a Soldier environment, whether in training, exercises, or combat. ATEC supplies resulting T&E information to senior leaders regarding materiel effectiveness, suitability, and survivability.

The ATEC part of the system safety life cycle process is safety verification. As part of the safety verification program, we are responsible for safety releases and safety confirmations . Both of these documents are prepared by the ATEC Test Manager and signed by the Commander of ATEC.
