In 1954, the US Military Assistance Advisory Group, Taiwan (MAAG, Taiwan) was stationed at the base. USAF use of the base began in 1958 with the deployment of twelve Lockheed F-104 Starfighters from the 83d Fighter-Interceptor Squadron during the Quemoy crisis. The crisis was peacefully resolved, and the aircraft were returned to the United States.
During this period US military advisers were deployed to the ROC and joint exercises were common.
