Born in what would later become Cannon County, Tennessee. He was man of many talents in both religion and agriculture: preacher, college founder and professor, journalist, writer, and editor. For his era he was considered an innovative farmer writing and co-editing magazines, Agriculturalist from 1840-1845 and The Naturalist from 1846-1850.

Cummings was born in Cannon County, Tennessee, USA, east-southeast of Nashville. Other than during the course of his higher education he was a resident of that county throughout his life. He was first elected to represent that area in the Tennessee House of Representatives in 1928 and served for ten consecutive terms.

[ 1 ] : 361 Fanning's student, William Lipscomb , served as co-editor until the American Civil War forced them to suspend publication in 1861.
