The Power Management Bus (PMBus) is a variant of the System Management Bus (SMBus) which is targeted at digital management of power supplies.Like SMBus, it is a relatively slow speed two wire communications protocol based on I²C.
Using a standardized interface and protocol allows systems-management software based on IPMI to manage multiple, disparate servers. As a message-based, hardware-level interface specification, IPMI operates independently of the operating system (OS) to allow administrators to manage a system remotely in the absence of an operating system or of the system management software.

I3C targets which do not support HDR may then ignore bus traffic until they see a specific "HDR exit" sequence which informs them it is time to listen to the bus again.
