At the Second Battle of Winchester on 15 June 1863, Ewell's Second Corps trapped a Union division led by Brigadier General Robert H. Milroy and inflicted 4,443 casualties, including 3,358 captured. The Confederates lost only 269, [ 16 ] which included the Louisiana Guard Battery's Thompson mortally wounded.
