Sheridan County Airport (IATA: SHR, ICAO: KSHR, FAA LID: SHR) is located in Sheridan County, Wyoming, approxiametly two miles southwest of the city of Sheridan, Wyoming. [1] It serves both commercial and general aviation, as well as military aircraft. Sheridan once again has scheduled passenger airline service with nonstop flights to Denver . [2]

Fort Sheridan was just to the north, near what is now the city of Sheridan. Fort Phil Kearny, known to the Plains Indians as the "hated post on the Little Piney", played an important role in Red Cloud's War (1866-1868), and the area around the fort was the site of the Fetterman massacre and the Wagon Box Fight. [4]
Western Airlines would later acquire Wyoming Air Service and operate a Denver-Cheyenne-Casper-Sheridan-Billings route which lasted until 1979. Various aircraft were used including the Boeing 247 , Douglas DC-3 , Douglas DC-6B , Lockheed L-188 Electra , and finally upgrading to jets with the Boeing 737-200 by 1969.

The airport has twice-daily United Express flights to Denver International Airport. Sweetwater Aviation is the fixed-base operator , providing all general aviation services on the field. The National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2019-2023 categorized it as a primary commercial service airport (more than 10,000 enplanements per year).
Western Airlines was the first carrier to serve Casper tracing its roots back to 1931 as Wyoming Air Service with a north-south route from Denver to Great Falls, Montana, stopping in Cheyenne, Casper, Sheridan, Billings, and Lewiston. Wyoming Air Service changed to Inland Air Lines in 1938 and was merged into Western Airlines in 1952.
