Nurse Journal outlines the top online programs for registered nurses interested in becoming nurse practitioners.
An advanced practice nurse (APN) is a nurse with post-graduate education and training in nursing. Nurses practicing at this level may work in either a specialist or generalist capacity. APNs are prepared with advanced didactic and clinical education, knowledge, skills, and scope of practice in nursing.
The present-day concept of advanced practice nursing as a primary care provider was created in the mid-1960s, spurred on by a national shortage of physicians. [7] The first formal graduate certificate program for NPs was created by Henry Silver, a physician, and Loretta Ford, a nurse, in 1965. [7]
Most programs confer the PhD in nursing or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). Areas of advanced nursing practice include that of a nurse practitioner (NP), a certified nurse midwife (CNM), a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA), or a clinical nurse specialist (CNS).
The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association (ANA), is a certification body for nursing board certification and the largest certification body for advanced practice registered nurses in the United States, [1] as of 2011 certifying over 75,000 APRNs, including nurse practitioners and clinical nurse specialists.
Degrees offered include the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Nursing, and the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree. The school of nursing offers degrees in several Nurse Practitioner (NP) specialties such as Family NP, Adult-Gerontology Primary/Acute Care NP, Pediatric Primary/Acute Care NP, Psychiatric-Mental Health NP, Women's Health NP, and Nurse-Midwifery.
