Tracks were dormant from 1981 until 1992, when restoration began with a 4-mile (6.4 km) section from Thendara to Minnehaha, New York. The section was approved and demonstrated on July 4, 1992, and the line was given the name Adirondack Centennial Railroad. It was renamed Adirondack Scenic Railroad in 1994.
The Adirondack is a daily intercity passenger train operated by Amtrak between New York City and Montreal. The scenic route follows the Empire Corridor through the Hudson Valley with major stops in Yonkers , Poughkeepsie , Albany–Rensselaer , and Schenectady .
The Adirondack Scenic Railroad has trackage rights over the line from Utica to Remsen. The southern division also operates a seven-mile spur into the city of Rome off the CSX mainline. The spur is accessed with trackage rights for thirteen miles over the CSX track from the Utica interchange to the Rome spur junction. [2]
The first heritage railway to operate on the line was the Upper Hudson River Railroad, which operated from 1998 to 2010. The Saratoga and North Creek Railway started operation in 2011 and ceased operations in 2018. The Adirondack Railway was incorporated in 1976 to rehabilitate and operate passenger services on the line. Conrail, successor to Penn Central, still owned the Remsen–Utica portion but permitted the Adirondack to operate trains over it. Trains began running as far as Hadley, New York, on December 1, 1865. In Saratoga Springs, connection was made with the Rensselaer and Saratoga Railroad. [1] The line reached North Creek, New York, in 1871. [2] The Delaware and Hudson Railway gained control of the line in 1889 and merged the Adirondack Railway in 1902. [3]

The Adirondack Railway (originally Adirondack Company) was a railroad that connected Saratoga Springs to North Creek, New York, a distance of 62 miles (100 km). [1] Built by Dr. Thomas Clark Durant , vice-president of the Union Pacific Railroad , it was started in 1864 and completed in 1871.
