Janet Arnold (6 October 1932 – 2 November 1998) was a British clothing historian, costume designer, teacher, conservator, and author.She is best known for her series of works called Patterns of Fashion, which included accurate scale sewing patterns, used by museums and theatres alike.
Because of the economic crash, designers were forced to slash prices for clothing in order to keep their business afloat, especially those working in couture houses. Designers were also forced to use cheaper fabric and materials, and dress patterns also grew in popularity as many women knew how to sew. Hence, clothing was made more accessible.
The Butterick family began selling their patterns from their Sterling, Massachusetts, home in 1863, and the business expanded so quickly that, in one year, they had a factory at 192 Broadway Street in New York City. At first producing only boy's and men's clothing patterns, the Buttericks expanded to dresses and women's clothes in 1866.
Demorest Paper Patterns were also advertised in other women's magazines at the time. [2] By the 20th century, sewing patterns were marketed for home dressmakers as well as professionals, and available in magazines, catalogs, and in shops. The commercial paper pattern industry had begun to be a major influence in the clothing industry. [2]
The movement was much less concerned with men's clothing, although it initiated the widespread adoption of knitted wool union suits or long johns. Some of the movement's proponents established dress reform parlors, or storefronts, where women could buy sewing patterns for the garments, or buy them directly. [2] [3]
