Chippewa County (/ ˈ tʃ ɪ p ə ˌ w ɑː / CHIP-ə-WAH) [3] is a county in the U.S. state of Minnesota. As of the 2020 census , the population was 12,598. [ 4 ] Its county seat is Montevideo . [ 5 ]
The Swensson Farm Museum is a historic farmstead located in Chippewa County, Minnesota, six miles (10 km) east of Montevideo.Established by Norwegian immigrants Olof and Ingeborg Swensson in the 1880s, the farmstead today serves as open-air museum operated by the Chippewa County Historical Society showcasing pioneer life and Swedish-American heritage.
The township was originally to be called Chippewa Township but later was renamed as that name was already taken for a township in Douglas County. The township was first settled along the timber districts along the Minnesota River. Later immigration filled in the prairies with farmsteads, with the first house being built on the prairie in 1869.
