Volvo Cars began manufacturing the Volvo 144 at Torslandaverken in the late summer of 1966 [7] for the 1967 model year.The 144 series, which followed the Volvo Amazon (120 series, outside of Sweden), was the first Volvo to use a tri-digit nomenclature, where the first digit indicated series, second digit indicated the number of cylinders, and third digit indicated the number of doors.
Starting with the 140 series in 1966, Volvo used a tri-digit system for their cars. The first number was the series, the second number the number of cylinders and the third number the number of doors; so a 164 was a 1-series with a six-cylinder engine and four doors.
The interior was revised, and the cars received a new dashboard more aligned with other Volvo models. Overall length was increased to 4,300 mm (169 in). Volvo 345 DL, the five-door version, 1982 model. The third digit designating the number of doors was dropped from model designations starting with the 1983 model year.
