On 7 August 2024, the Kaipara District Council became the first local council to vote to disestablish its Māori under the Government's 2024 legislation. Prior to the 2022 New Zealand local elections , the Council had voted to establish its Te Moananui o Kaipara Māori ward, which was won by Councillor Pera Paniora. [ 37 ]
