The assembly hall was later renamed the Chelmsford Theatre. [10] The civic centre continued to serve as the headquarters of the borough council for much of the 20th century and remained the local seat of government after the council area was enlarged to include the former surrounding rural district in 1974. At the 2024 general election, following the 2023 Periodic Review of Westminster constituencies which resulted in the constituency reducing in size, Marie Goldman of the Liberal Democrats was returned as MP for Chelmsford. Prior to Goldman's election, Chelmsford had been held by the Conservatives for 74 years, since the 1950 general election. [4]
