The difference is that whilst D1 has a 4:3 aspect ratio 960H has a 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio. The extra pixels are used to form the increased area to the sides of the D1 image. The pixel density of 960H is identical to standard D1 resolution so it does not give any improvement in image quality, merely a wider aspect ratio.
16:9 is a widescreen aspect ratio with a width of 16 units and height of 9 units. Once seen as an "exotic" aspect ratio, [ 1 ] since 2009, it has become the most common aspect ratio for televisions and computer monitors , and is also the universal standard image format for the universal 1080p , 2160p and 4320p formats.
[29] 16:9 video games are letterboxed on a 16:10 or 4:3 display or have reduced field of view. [30] As of 2013, many games are adopting support for 21:9 ultrawide resolutions, [31] which can give a gameplay advantage due to increased field of view, [23] although this is not always the case. [32]
1080p progressive scan HDTV, which uses a 16:9 ratio. Some commentators also use display resolution to indicate a range of input formats that the display's input electronics will accept and often include formats greater than the screen's native grid size even though they have to be down-scaled to match the screen's parameters (e.g. accepting a 1920 × 1080 input on a display with a native 1366 ...
There are other, non-standard display resolutions with 1080 lines whose aspect ratios fall between the usual 16∶9 and the ultra-wide 64∶27, e.g. 18∶9, 18.5∶9, 19∶9 and 19.5∶9. They are mostly used in smartphones or phablets and do not have established names, but may be subsumed under the umbrella term ultra-wide (full) HD .
The base resolution increased by increasing the width and keeping the height constant, for square or near-square pixels on a widescreen display, usually with an aspect ratio of either 16:9 (adding an extra 1/3rd width vs a standard 4:3 display) or 16:10 (adding an extra 1/5th).
In practice, 1080p typically refers to a 1920 × 1080p raster with a 16:9 picture aspect ratio. The following is a list of other resolutions with a picture height of 1080 lines that are sometimes referred as 1080p. [citation needed] A comparison of SVGA, XGA+ and Full HD
Many digital video cameras have the capability to record in 16:9 (= 4 2:3 2), and 16:9 is the only widescreen aspect ratio natively supported by the DVD standard. DVD producers can also choose to show even wider ratios such as 1.66:1, 1.75:1, 1.77:1 and 1.78:1 [ 1 ] within the 16:9 DVD frame by hard matting or adding black bars within the image ...
