Juneau County was established in 1857 when the Wisconsin Legislature passed legislation separating lands west of the Wisconsin River from what was then Adams County. [5] After a contest with neighboring New Lisbon , the county seat was established in Maugh's Town, which is known today as Mauston.
U.S. Highway 12 (US 12 or Highway 12) in the U.S. state of Wisconsin runs east–west across the western to southeast portions of the state. It enters from Minnesota running concurrently with Interstate 94 (I-94) at Hudson, parallels the Interstate to Wisconsin Dells, and provides local access to cities such as Menomonie, Eau Claire, Black River Falls, Tomah, and Mauston.
The Juneau County Courthouse, located at 220 E. State St. in Mauston, Wisconsin, was built with Works Project Administration assistance. [2] It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. It was designed in Moderne style by architects Hougen & Henderson. A foundation stone indicates the year 1939; it was completed in 1941.
