A Patrick Norton donated an acre of land for the construction of a church, and the cornerstone was laid on July 3, 1864. [ 2 ] In 1952, the Holy Cross Fathers who had been administering the parish were removed, and the parish became a mission of St. Henry's in Watertown, then of St. John's in Clyman.

Old St. Joseph Church, which is still an active church, was built in 1890 and renovated in 1998. [12] [13] It is located on the site of a former mission chapel that was erected for early settlers by the French-born Jesuit priest Rev. Charles Albane in 1676. The chapel stood for nearly 200 years.
The Cathedral of St. Joseph the Workman is the mother church of the Diocese of La Crosse. The cathedral, designed by architect Edward J. Schulte, was completed in 1962. [1] Built of limestone, it has a tall clock tower which rises above the surrounding buildings in downtown La Crosse, Wisconsin. [2]
