Re: The Best and Worst Outboards of all Time? 3 to 4HP JohnnyRudes from the 50s to the 90s. Next would be the 5 to 8HP JohnnyRudes of the same period. First choice would be magneto fired.

I would avoid air cooled engines based on lawnmower and chainsaw powerheads from any period.

JohnnyRude 60 degree looper V4s would be my ...
Of those which included Mercury, Mariner, Johnson, Force, and Honda. The Honda was a 4-stroke and everything else was 2 stroke. The Mercurys and Mariners Ranged from 70 to 150 hp, the single Force was a 40 hp and the Johnsons were 60 and 70 hp.
Oct 1, 2010. #1. Hi to all, Some of you may have already come across my former postings in regards with choosing the most dependable 4 stroke 25 Hp outboard, here is a small list in order of prefference: -Honda BF 25 Carb. , -Yamaha F25 A Carb. , -Tohatsu MFS 25 EFI and the clones disquised as Mercury 25 EFI,Nissan NSF 25 EFI.
I AM A BIG FAN OF JOHNSON/EVINRUDE'S FROM THE 1950'S.EASY TO WORK ON PARTS ARE CHEAP AND EASY TO FIND AND THESE MOTORS WERE BUILD TO LAST AND THATS WHAT THEY DID.YOU WONT FIND ANY PLASTIC ON THESE MOTORS.50 60 70 80 90 EVEN 100 YEARS LATER THE OLD IRONS ARE STILL FOUND AND IF THEY WERE TREATED RIGHT IT WILL COST VARY LITTLE TO NOTHING TO GET ...
Agree with Fastbullet. Go with the Bombardier fuel line. It's compliant with the new 2013 gov't regs for ethanol. It comes in two hose sizes: 8' 5/16" 5008609 and 10' 3/8" 5008589. These new Bombardier (gov' compliant) hoses are not cheap, but you won't have issues with the ethanol breaking down the inner hose liner.

Our outboard usage is very sporadic, often unused for 9 months at a time so some years the fuel passages to the jets need to be cleaned but the convenience, power, range, etc of the gasoline outboard have convinced me that it's the best choice. Using a gasoline outboard and carrying fuel has worked for us for 35 years on this boat, and the ...

Nov 21, 2004. #2. Re: Which fuel line and primer bulb to buy. All aftermarket fuel lines are crap. They get stiff in very few years and the plastic connectors are wimpy. You can't beat Mercury's lines and bulbs. You'll go thru two in a motor's lifetime. The cheapo crapola you'll be replacing every other year.

Just because there are certificates hanging on the wall does not mean the techs are really qualified to work on high-tech engines so check around.
