Illinois Route 16 (IL 16) is an east–west highway in central Illinois. Its western terminus is at the Joe Page Bridge over the Illinois River in Hardin, while its eastern terminus is at Paris at Illinois Route 1 and U.S. Route 150, with Illinois Route 133. This is a distance of 174.66 miles (281.09 km). [1]
The State Route 16 designation was originally applied to the routing carrying U.S. Route 422; when that route was created, SR 16 moved to the routing that had carried State Route 20. SR 16 was rerouted at its east end after the creation of US 36, then later truncated to Coshocton, with the eastern end becoming State Route 416.
The district encompasses the Lumpkin Heights and Elm Ridge Subdivision neighborhoods in eastern Mattoon. Lumpkin Heights was originally developed as Lafayette Heights in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and it only became known by its current name after further development in the mid-twentieth century.
