The community was first named Lauren for the townsite owner, Lauren, and was later renamed Penn for English stockholders. [2] It has a post office with the ZIP code 58362. [3]

It runs from County Road 19 (CR 19) at the McHenry–Pierce county line to ND 20 in Devils Lake, a total of 70 miles (112.65 km).
