On December 27, 1940, the Conference of State and Local History met and disbanded itself. Then the American Association for State and Local History was born. Its first charter stated that AASLH's purpose was, simply, “the promotion of effort and activity in the fields of state, provincial, and local history in the United States and Canada.” [4]

In the 1970s, the SAA began to collaborate with the American Association of Museums and the Association for State and Local History to form a Joint Committee on Opportunities for Minorities in Museums, Archives, and Historical Agencies. [9] Phil Mason and Elsie Freivogel were appointed but outreach to minority members of the SAA was poor.

The founding of an oral history association was first discussed at this meeting, and James Mink served as the Chairman of the new association from 1967 to 1968. In its first newsletter, in June 1967, the association announced that it had been incorporated as a registered non-profit educational organization in New York State. [4]
The society owns and operates the Washington State History Museum. The society's official journal is Columbia: The Magazine of Northwest History. In 2016, the publication received a Leadership in History Award of Merit from the American Association for State and Local History. [2]
