Bridgend County Borough (Welsh: Bwrdeistref Sirol Pen-y-bont ar Ogwr) is a county borough in the south-east of Wales. The county borough has a total population of 139,200 people, and contains the town of Bridgend , after which it is named.
Bridgend County Borough and its council came into effect from 1 April 1996, following the Local Government (Wales) Act 1994.Bridgend County Borough Council largely replaced Ogwr Borough Council, though St Brides Major, Ewenny and Wick were transferred from Ogwr to the Vale of Glamorgan.

Since The County Borough of Bridgend (Electoral Arrangements) Order 1998 (and from the 1999 county council elections) the county borough has been divided into 39 electoral wards electing 54 county councillors. [2] Six of these wards are coterminous with communities (civil parishes) of the same name. Some communities have their own elected council.

Bridgend (English: / b r ɪ ˈ dʒ ɛ n d /; Welsh: Pen-y-bont ar Ogwr or just Pen-y-bont, meaning "the end of the bridge on the Ogmore") [2] is a town in the Bridgend County Borough of Wales, 20 miles (32 km) west of Cardiff and 20 miles (32 km) east of Swansea. The town is named after the medieval bridge over the River Ogmore.
