The 50 State Quarters program was initially inspired by a 1992 Royal Canadian Mint program, "Canada 125", marking the 125th anniversary of the country's Confederation with a series of commemorative 25-cent pieces representing each of its 12 (at the time) provinces and territories.
A "Type set" collection is enjoyed by some collectors of coins who try to collect one example of as many types of coins as they can. Due to various reasons (including prohibitive cost), collectors will sometimes group several different coins together as one "type."
The Liberty Head nickel, sometimes referred to as the V nickel because of its reverse (or tails) design, is an American five-cent piece. It was struck for circulation from 1883 until 1912, with at least five pieces being surreptitiously struck dated 1913.
In 1883, the Liberty Head nickel was issued, featuring designs by Mint Engraver Charles E. Barber.After the first coins were circulated, the design was modified to add the word "CENTS" to the reverse because the similarity in size with the half eagle allowed criminals to gild the new nickels and pass them as five-dollar coins. The collection was expanded, after J. Paul Getty's death in 1976, to include examples of early Italian and Dutch works, French impressionists and the examples of the Spanish and German schools.
