1980 Honda XR 500A. Introduced in 1979, the twin-shock Honda XR 500 was the first "XR" model. The engine was a four-stroke, four-valve OHC, 497 cc (30.3 cu in) "Pentroof" engine. The bike had a conventional 18" rear wheel but an unusual 23" front wheel which was supposed to be better for riding over potholes and ruts.

The Honda XL80S was a dual-sport motorcycle made by Honda for five years starting in 1980. All models had metal fuel tanks and used the same engine. The XL80S looks like a dirt bike, and shares many characteristics with a dirt bike, but it is street-legal and intended for on- and off-road use.
The potential of the new machine was found so impressive by Dirt Bike Magazine, they named it Bike of the Year, [13] two years ahead of its release. In February 1999, Dirt Bike editor Ron Lawson was quoted regarding the unreleased bike's possible appeal to "older moto guys who want kind of a status symbol" as opposed to novice motorcyclists. [14]
