The name Gilas was adopted from the mascot of the 2005 Southeast Asian Games held in Manila, Philippines which is an eagle. The mascot was designed by Filipino sports journalist Danny Simon. In 2013, the Smart brand was dropped from the branding of both programs, although Smart Communications remained as the main sponsor.
