In 1982 the hotel was a Howard Johnson. [9] In 1986 the hotel was named the Cabaña. [10] Over the decades the Cabana deteriorated, finally becoming a Quality Inn. A plan by Stang & Newdow [11] around the turn of the 21st century to renovate the Cabana into a boutique hotel was unsuccessful. The Cabana was razed to make way for the Spire.
The hotel began in 1935 as the King and Prince Beach Club, a seaside dance club built by Morgan T. Wynne and Franklin J. Horne. It was noted for its big band entertainment and dancing. After two fires, the club was rebuilt and opened on July 2, 1941, as the King and Prince Hotel.
Motel construction in the Wildwoods began in the early 1950s. 1958 was a banner year for construction in Wildwood Crest, with the opening of the Satellite, Caribbean, El Reno (later the South Beach Motel), Sand Castle, Swan Motel and Tangiers motels. The Rio Motel, in Wildwood proper, also made its debut that spring. [6]
