Cuesta Benberry (September 8, 1923 – August 23, 2007) was an American historian and scholar. [1] Considered to be one of the pioneers of research on quiltmaking in America, she was the pioneer of research on African-American quiltmaking.
She rose to prominence as the face of Missouri Star Quilt Company, the largest quilting supply vendor in the United States. Referred to as “The most famous quilter in the world,” her YouTube channel has surpassed over 210 million cumulative views, and she is regarded as a leading figure in the pre-cut quilting movement.
Missouri Pettway (1902-1981) was an American artist. She is associated with the Gee's Bend quilting collective. In 2020, the National Gallery of Art acquired two of Missouri Pettway's quilts, along with work by other quilters from Gee's Bend. [ 3 ]
Loretta Pettway (born 1942) is an American artist and quilt maker of the Gee's Bend Collective from Boykin, Alabama. Her quilts are known for their bold and improvisational style. [1] In 2006 her quilts "Roman Stripes" variation [2] and Medallion [3] appeared on two US Postal service stamps as part of a series commemorating Gee's bend quilters. [4]
