Arcadia College closed in 1877. The building was acquired by Order of the Ursulines for Ursuline Academy/College. The school closed in 1971. The Lewis Lecture Series at Texas A&M is named for a former chair of A&M's English Department who served as president of Arcadia from 1870 to 1873.

Iron County includes the 6-mile (9.7 km)-long, 2-mile (3.2 km)-wide Arcadia Valley, the site of Pilot Knob, Ironton, and Arcadia, communities established by immigrants in the 19th Century. [5] The valley is surrounded by the Saint Francois Mountains of the Ozarks Plateau .
Ironton was designated county seat in 1857, soon after the formation of Iron County. [6] Like the county, Ironton was named from the deposits of iron ore found in the vicinity. [7] A post office called Ironton has been in operation since 1858. [8] In early August 1861, Brigader General Sam Grant led a force of four regiments in the area.
