First, insert a proper minus sign into a Word document somewhere using the "Insert symbol" function. Highlight that minus sign. Go to "Tools" --> "Autocorrect". Have you looked in AutoCorrect - maybe the negation sign is being changed to a hyphen. In A1 in new worksheet type the negation sign in A1 in B1 enter =CODE(A1). This should return 45; if you get 150 or 151 then something is converting it to an en-dash or an em-dash. best wishes

if a cell with a number shows as ##### that means the column is not wide enough to display all digits of the number, including leading minus sign or brackets for negative numbers. Try to make the column wider, or set a smaller font size and the negative number should show correctly.
