The Oricon Singles Chart is the Japanese music industry-standard singles popularity chart issued daily, weekly, monthly and yearly by Oricon. Chart rankings are based on physical singles' sales. Until 2017, Oricon did not track download sales.
In December 2018, the company launched a combined singles chart, which is based on physical, digital, and streaming sales data. [1] It follows from the introduction of Oricon's digital charts in 2017 and its co-launch of its streaming charts in the same period.

In the 2010s, the Oricon Singles Chart lost popularity to the Billboard Japan Hot 100. Since Oricon's chart only accounted for CD sales, groups like AKB48 (pictured) topped the chart by selling many copies, even if the songs were not the most listened-to. The Combined Singles Chart was subsequently established.
