In the early 1900s, there were 328 plantations identified in North Carolina from extant records. [ 10 ] [ 8 ] [ 9 ] The Sloop Point plantation in Pender County, built in 1729, is the oldest surviving plantation house and the second oldest house surviving in North Carolina, after the Lane House (built in 1718–1719 and not part of a plantation).
A 12,791-square foot home, located on Twin Silo Road in Plumstead Township, sold for $12.9 million on August 9, 2024.
The land was originally the home of the Cherokee Nation, who were mostly displaced to Oklahoma along the Trail of Tears in 1838. A grant of 5,000 acres (2,000 ha) was made to Daniel D. Foute in 1837. This included the area now covered by Top of the World, which was purchased by a developer in the early 1960s.
In 1832 the local entrepreneur Daniel Davis Foute bought 6,300 acres (2,500 ha) of land on Chilhowee Mountain, including a black sulphur spring, and built a ten-room log hotel. Foute used Cherokee laborers to build roads to connect the hotel to turnpikes to Georgia and North Carolina. He planted vineyards and orchards. [4]

Carter County is a county located in the U.S. state of Tennessee.As of the 2020 census, the population was 56,356. [2] Its county seat is Elizabethton. [3] The county is named in honor of Landon Carter (1760–1800), an early settler active in the "Lost State of Franklin" 1784-1788 secession from the State of North Carolina.
