A study by German historian Rüdiger Overmans concluded that total German military deaths were much higher than those originally reported by the German High Command, amounting to 5.3 million, including 900,000 men conscripted from outside Germany's 1937 borders, in Austria and in east-central Europe.
They were written by assistants of Heinrich Himmler and contain Himmler's daily schedule in 1937–1938, the year of the Kristallnacht, and also the critical year between 1943 and 1944. [2] The diaries were confiscated by the Red Army after the war with other documents seized from German military installations around Berlin.
