Uses of figurative language, or figures of speech, can take multiple forms, such as simile, metaphor, hyperbole, and many others. [10] Merriam-Webster's Encyclopedia of Literature says that figurative language can be classified in five categories: resemblance or relationship, emphasis or understatement, figures of sound, verbal games, and errors.
Simile. A simile (/ ˈsɪməli /) is a figure of speech that directly compares two things. [1][2] Similes are often contrasted with metaphors, where similes necessarily compare two things using words such as "like", "as", while metaphors often create an implicit comparison (i.e. saying something "is" something else).

A metaphor is a figure of speech that, for rhetorical effect, directly refers to one thing by mentioning another. [1] It may provide (or obscure) clarity or identify hidden similarities between two different ideas. Metaphors are usually meant to create a likeness or an analogy.
Simile. The easiest stylistic device to identify is a simile, signaled by the use of the words "like" or "as". A simile is a comparison used to attract the reader's attention and describe something in descriptive terms. Example: "From up here on the fourteenth floor, my brother Charley looks like an insect scurrying among other insects."
Personification: Using comparative metaphors and similes to give characteristics to abstract concepts. Taken from Act I, Scene II of Romeo and Juliet: "When well-appareled April on the heel / Of limping winter treads." [16] Polyptoton: Words derived from the same root in a sentence. "Not as a call to battle, though embattled we are."
There is idiosyncratic capitalization, especially for nouns. Many of the themes in the poem are created through the initial simile of winter light "that oppresses, like the Heft / Of Cathedral Tunes -" This simile creates a synesthetic effect, mixing sound, sight, and weight.
