This is a list of diplomatic missions in South Africa. There are 134 embassies and high commissions in Pretoria, and many countries maintain either an embassy, high commission or consulate in Cape Town and consulates in other major cities. Trade missions and honorary consulates are omitted from this listing.
The mission was closed in 1865, but reopened in 1903.The South African government limited the amount of missionaries allowed to enter the country in 1921 and in 1955. Starting around 1930, a man had to trace his genealogy out of Africa to be eligible for the priesthood , since black people were not permitted to be ordained.
The alphabetic country codes were first included in ISO 3166 in 1974, and the numeric country codes were first included in 1981. The country codes have been published as ISO 3166-1 since 1997, when ISO 3166 was expanded into three parts, with ISO 3166-2 defining codes for subdivisions and ISO 3166-3 defining codes for former countries .
