According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.97 square miles (7.69 km 2), of which, 2.72 square miles (7.04 km 2) is land and 0.25 square miles (0.65 km 2) is water. Linn County later constructed a new jail, and the old building was sold to the city of Mound City in January 1903.
