Emirates, the world's fourth-largest airline by scheduled revenue passenger-kilometers flown and number of international passengers carried, was founded in 1985 [1] by the royal family of Dubai. The airline's first flight was from Dubai to Karachi, Pakistan and Mumbai, India in October of that year.
Emirates was founded in March 1985 with backing from Dubai's ruler, Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. On 25 October 1985, Emirates operated its first flight from Dubai to Karachi and Mumbai, using the Airbus A300 B4 and the Boeing 737 both wet-leased from Pakistan International Airlines.
This is a list of airlines by foundation date, founded before December 31, 1930. The date of the first airline service may differ from the foundation date. Bold names and a light-green background indicate that the airline is still in operation, while light-yellow indicates a disputed claim.
Revenues increased by about $100 million each year, approaching $500 million in 1993. It carried 68,000 tons of cargo and 1.6 million passengers in the same year. The Gulf War had helped Emirates by keeping other airlines out of the area. Emirates was the only airline to continue flying in the last ten days of the war.
Emirates bought a 40% stake worth US$70 million (which it later increased to 43.6%) in Air Lanka and sought to refurbish the airline's image and fleet. The government retained a majority stake in the airline but gave full control to Emirates for investment and management decisions. In 1998, Air Lanka re-branded to SriLankan Airlines. [10]
