Spike tries to convince Tom and Jerry to become good friends in order to show his son Tyke what brotherly love is all about, but Tom keeps disrespecting Jerry, and the tables turn when Tyke says that dogs and cats can be friends as he wants his father to be a better neighbor and Tom's friend.
Spike, occasionally referred to as Butch or Killer, is a stern though occasionally dim-witted grey bulldog who is particularly disapproving of cats, but is gentle towards mice (though in his debut appearance, Dog Trouble (1942), Spike goes after both Tom and Jerry), and later, his son Tyke.
Tom works at a zoo run by Spike, who orders him to make sure nobody feeds the zoo's animals (only Spike can) or else he will have his badge. However, Jerry inadvertently and constantly causes trouble by framing Tom while he tries to prevent Jerry from feeding them.
