Florence Lawrence (born Florence Annie Bridgwood; January 2, 1886 – December 28, 1938) was a Canadian-American stage performer and film actress.She is often referred to as the "first movie star", and was long thought to be the first film actor to be named publicly [1] until evidence published in 2019 indicated that the first named film star was French actor Max Linder. Biograph Girl was a phrase associated with two early-20th-century actresses, Florence Lawrence and Mary Pickford, who made black-and-white silent films with the Biograph Company. At that time, all studios refused to give actors on-screen film credit; they did not want them to gain public celebrity status and command higher salaries.
This was Florence Lawrence's first movie; she went on to star in more Vitagraph films, but her real name never appeared on the credits. She later went to work with Biograph Studios and after marrying Harry Solter , she moved to Independent Moving Pictures Company of America (IMP).
Florence Lawrence kept notes of her first experiences in the film, which show that Porter did not delegate much of the work, which led to a slow shooting schedule. [3] Porter created a fire effect in the film by hand-painting portions of the negative.
At a time when leading screen players worked anonymously, IMP performers Florence Lawrence, formerly known as "The Biograph Girl," and King Baggot became the first "movie stars" to be given billing and screen credits, a marquee as well as promotion in advertising, which contributed to the creation of the star system.
Florence Lawrence, the "first real movie star", the Biograph Girl [5] in Hollywood history, who appeared in more than 270 movies, committed suicide at the age of 52. She is buried in unmarked grave in the Hollywood Cemetery . [ 6 ]
