All degree programmes consist of 120 credits curricula which have been designed in par with international standards. Several departments have established active foreign collaborations in teaching and research. This is the very first faculty of Allied Health Sciences in Sri Lanka. [2]
The university has responded to the needs of the country and established two new faculties — 'Management and Finance' and 'Fisheries and Marine Science' — the first of its kind in Sri Lanka. Thus, the university has as many faculties as the University of Peradeniya, the largest in Sri Lanka. The main campus is at Matara.
The university library system consists of a main library and several branch libraries that are spread across the university’s different faculties such as Applied Science, Agriculture, Medicine & Allied Sciences, and Technology. The university received subscriptions of the following databases for the online materials.
The courses are highly up-to-date and job-oriented. The Wayamba University of Sri Lanka is headquartered at Kuliyapitiya, Sri Lanka. Its six faculties are in Makandura and Kuliyapitiya. The Faculty of Applied Sciences, Faculty of Business Studies, Finance and Faculty of Technology and Faculty of Medicine were established at Kuliyapitiya.
Establishment of both faculties was approved by the Ministry of Education, on 5 April 1947. It was moved to Peradeniya in 1954. In 1973, the Department of Veterinary Science was upgraded to a School of Veterinary Science within a Faculty of Medical, Dental and Veterinary Sciences. By 1980, it received the full faculty status.
Its current dean is Upul Subasinghe of the Department of Forestry and Environmental Science. [8] The Department of Medical Education and Health Sciences (DME&HS) [9] was established to improve and sustain the quality of the Faculty of Medical Sciences and to present certificate and diploma courses in the health sciences.
The association does not regulate or certify doctors, a responsibility which lies with the Sri Lanka Medical Council. It carries out education and academic programs in family medicine. From 1980 to 1989 it formed and administrated the first private medical school in the country, the North Colombo Medical College offering its own MBBS degree. [1]
In 1980 it was reorganized and renamed under the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine Act No.1 of 1980.
