Socket AM3 is a CPU socket for AMD processors. AM3 was launched on February 9, 2009 as the successor to Socket AM2+ , alongside the initial grouping of Phenom II processors designed for it. [ 1 ] The sole principal change from AM2+ to AM3 is support for DDR3 SDRAM .
Memory support: DDR2 SDRAM up to PC2-8500, DDR3 SDRAM up to PC3-10600 (Socket AM3 only) On some Callisto dual core processors e.g. 555 BE, the two disabled cores can be enabled, effectively providing a quad core processor for the price of a dual core. This however does not work on all the processors with two cores disabled.
Socket AM3+ is a modification of Socket AM3, which was released on February 9, 2009. AM3+ was released in mid-2011 [1] designed for CPUs which use the AMD Bulldozer microarchitecture and retains compatibility with processors made for AM3. [2] The Vishera line of AMD CPUs also all use Socket AM3+.
2.1.12 "Regor" (Socket AM3, Dual-core, C3, 45 nm) 2.1.13 FM2/FM2+ Semprons ... The Sempron is a name used for AMD's low-end CPUs, replacing the Duron processor. The ...
Phenom II is a family of AMD's multi-core 45 nm processors using the AMD K10 microarchitecture, succeeding the original Phenom. Advanced Micro Devices released the Socket AM2+ version of Phenom II in December 2008, while Socket AM3 versions with DDR3 support, along with an initial batch of triple- and quad-core processors were released on February 9, 2009. For Socket F and Socket AM2 Opterons, the second digit (the Z) represents the processor generation. Presently, only 2 (dual-core), DDR2, 3 (quad-core) and 4 (six-core) are used. For all Opterons, the last two digits in the model number (the YY ) indicate the clock rate (frequency) of a CPU, a higher number indicating a higher clock rate.
This allows consumers to easily identify the Socket through the chipset name. Socket AM3+ supports solely Bulldozer (microarchitecture)-based FX-processors. In support of AM3+ CPUs, AMD has validated the 9-Series chipset for use with HyperTransport 3.1 (up to 6.4 GT/s). They also worked with NVIDIA to bring SLI support to this chipset series. [1]
