Sir John William Salmond KC (3 December 1862 – 19 September 1924) was a legal scholar, public servant and judge in New Zealand. Biography.
John Salmond was born the son of Major General Sir William Salmond and Emma Mary Salmond (née Hoyle). [1] His siblings included a brother, Geoffrey, [1] and sister, Gwen. [2] [3] After first being taught by a series of governesses he then attended Miss Dixon's School in Thurloe Square, London. [4]

Salmond was born in Abbey St Bathans, Berwickshire, Scotland, the youngest of seven children of John Cockburn and Elizabeth Cockburn née Liddle. [2] Cockburn was a farm labourer, and the family emigrated to New Zealand to escape poverty. They arrived in Dunedin on 4 January 1873 aboard the Zealandia.
