Wainwright was born in Manhattan, New York. [4] He was the son of Eleanor Painter (née Sloan) (1903–1985) and Loudon Snowden Wainwright (1898–1942).[5] [6] His father, a graduate of the Pawling School and Princeton University, was a senior partner in the insurance firm of Wainwright & Page, Inc. [7]
The resulting tapes impressed Wainwright's father Loudon, who passed them on to family friend and musician Van Dyke Parks. Parks then in turn sent the recordings to DreamWorks Records executive Lenny Waronker, who signed Wainwright to the label in 1996.
