El Observador (EO) is a weekly bilingual (English and Spanish) print and online newspaper, which has been in business since 1980. El Observador was the first Bilingual weekly newspaper publication in the San Jose-San Francisco-Oakland Metropolitan Area. Its headquarters are located in San Jose, although it is originally published in San Francisco.
In 1939, UCAPAWA Vice-President Dorothy Ray Healey played an important role in unionizing workers at California Sanitary Canning Company (Cal San) in Los Angeles, who struck in August of the same year. Union members picketed the cannery, grocery stores that sold Cal San goods, and the houses of the Shapiro brothers, the plant's owners.
La Palma was incorporated on October 26, 1955. It was originally incorporated as Dairyland, and was one of three dairy cities in the region (the other two being Dairy Valley, now Cerritos, and Dairy City, now Cypress) but when the dairies moved east in 1965, the name of the community was changed to La Palma, after the region's Spanish heritage and its main thoroughfare, La Palma Avenue.
